Volunteer Opportunities with Kids

my kids volunteering at a local food bank in venice, california

I’ve put together some of the places we’ve volunteered at or I’m aware allow volunteering with children (not only now during these distressing times but on a go-forward basis). I’ve included min age for places that have one (for reference we started during the pandemic when my eldest was 5 but I would say use your best judgment of when it’s appropriate to start with your child). Most of the organizations listed are on the west side since that’s closer for us, but feel free to comment, ask me any questions or message me if I should add any additional organizations to this list.

  1. Baby2Baby - Volunteers help sort through baby items (diapers, clothing, and other basic necessities) and help package them to be delivered to places of need. Join their mailing list and you’ll get updated monthly with the next month’s available volunteer shifts. All volunteers must be 7+ and shifts are usually 2 hours at their warehouse.

  2. Food Forward - Volunteers can help harvest fruit that would otherwise go to waste and have it donated to local hunger relief organizations. Offered several times a month and many of the volunteer opportunities are open to kids 5+.

  3. Nourish LA - Distributes food every Sunday. Volunteers help set up tables and tents, sort food, and distribute between 10 AM - 3 PM.

  4. St. Mark Food Pantry - Distributes food every Saturday. Volunteers help set up tables and tents, sort food and help distribute between 8:30 AM - 1:30 PM. There are also volunteer opportunities during the week.

  5. Westside Food Bank - Every Tuesday afternoon and Friday morning, volunteers help pack produce kits that get distributed to local food banks.
